When attending the inauguration of the City Express Plus by Marriott Guadalajara Providencia hotel, accompanied by the Secretary of Tourism of Jalisco, Claudia Vanessa Pérez Lamas
, the head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) pointed out that this new property strengthens the hotel infrastructure, the backbone of national tourism activity, which represents 33% of Tourism GDP and generates 10% of employment in this sector.
He indicated that in 2021, 13,502 new rooms were built in the country, reaching 867,328 hotel rooms, which represents 4% more than in 2019. Likewise, the lodging offer reached 25,200 establishments, that is 6.3 % above 2019; so that Mexico is reaffirmed in the seventh position worldwide in hotel infrastructure.
Torruco Marqués specified that, in 2022, 80.6 million tourists arrived at hotel rooms in 70 selected tourist centers,
of which 73.5% were nationals and 26.5% foreigners, with an estimated consumption per lodging reaching 14 billion dollars.
He stressed that hotel occupancy last year was 57%, reaching 49% in cities, and 66% on the beach, although up to 90% was registered in the most popular destinations.
In addition to this, from 1999 to 2022, the national hotel industry has captured an average of 23% of the total Foreign Direct Investment in Tourism.

He recognized the support of Barrios Sánchez, as president of the National Association of Hotel Chains for responding to Sectur’s call in 2020, to collaborate in the preparation and implementation of biosanitary protocols in lodging centers during the pandemic.
He also thanked the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels, chaired by Miguel Ángel Fong, for their invaluable support in these difficult times.
The Secretary of Tourism emphasized that this action ordered by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, together with the non-restriction of international flights and the vaccination strategy, was correct, having given an advantage over the great powers that compete with Mexico from an economic point of view. .
He pointed out that, on the occasion of these actions, the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili, delivered recognition to the President of the Republic at the National Palace.

The head of Sectur emphasized the relevance of the hotel industry in the development of the tourist activity, for which reason in August 2016 the agreement by which we instituted March 9 as «Day of Hospitality in Mexico City», and in December of the same year, this date is also declared as «National Hospitality Day», by agreement published in the Official Gazette of the Federation.
He added that, as a tribute to this thriving sector, in August 2021 the Museum of Mexican Hospitality was launched, in Orizaba, Veracruz, the cradle that saw him born in 1525 when the first inn on the American continent appears, according to with Acts of the Cabildo of New Spain.
