Gran Canaria.- On February 11, at 6:30 p.m., at the Island Library, the film ‘Hitchcock/Truffaut’, by Kent Jones, will be screened

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, February 7, 2020.-  The excellent documentary that Kent Jones made in 2015 entitled ‘Hitchcock/Truffaut’, very precisely synthesizes the priorities of two totemic filmmakers with very different strategies who recognized themselves as brothers in the distance in their mutual conviction to merge cinema and life.

Within the framework of Espacio Fronterizos at the Insular Library, on February 11, at 6:30 p.m., the aforementioned film in which Jones tries not so much to analyze Hitchcock’s cinema as to convert the book called ‘Cinema according to Hitchcock ‘, published in 1966 by Truffaut based on the distillation of the intense conversations held in 1962 in Los Angeles with the master of live suspense as a cinematographic object, recovering the original recordings, giving space to fragments that did not survive editorial editing and extending the conversation with filmmakers as diverse as Scorsese, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Assayas, Fincher or Wes Anderson.

As will be recalled, last January the aforementioned space of the Island Library, coordinated by Armando Álamo, began its activity for the year by dedicating its first meeting to the figure of Alfred Hitchcock, dealing with the aforementioned book published in Spain in 2010 by Alianza Editorial. In this second installment Espacio Fronterizos projects the documentary inspired by that book that many consider the culmination of the critical work of François Truffaut and, to a large extent, the sublimation of that Theory of the Author that the critics of Cahiers had forged, vindicating the figure of the artist where previous critical methodologies had only detected the artisan.

At the beginning of the sixties, Truffaut had already become a great filmmaker despite adding only 30 years and three films. The British director was 63 years old. The French filmmaker idolized the master of suspense ever since he interviewed him with Claude Chabrol during the filming of ‘To Catch a Thief’ on the Côte d’Azur. According to his own confession, both were entranced by Hitchcock’s intelligence.

The documentary film by the American Kent Jones, director of the New York festival since 2012, included the participation of directors such as Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Wes Anderson, James Grey, Richard Linklater, Peter Bogdanovich, Olivier Assayas or Arnaud Desplechin, who give his point of view on how the meeting between two men of different generations and nationalities ended up altering the course of cinema history. All the directors interviewed in ‘Hitchcock / Truffaut’ maintain that the book that contained the conversation between the two was fundamental in their education as filmmakers.

Jones reconstructs the story of that meeting, fundamental to the history of cinema, creating a superb collage of photographs, movie excerpts, interviews with various directors and videotapes recorded from those 26 hours of conversation. With an interpreter involved, they talk and smoke in a room, while being photographed by Philippe Halsman. Many current filmmakers learned more about cinema from what is reflected in the mythical book than from film schools. But now the enjoyment is greater when you can see the conversation in the documentary ‘Hitchcock / Truffaut’, which premiered in 2016 in Spain, after passing through various festivals such as Cannes and San Sebastián.

Next March 10, Espacio Fronterizos receives the visit of the writer, director and screenwriter Elio Quiroga to close the circle around the maestro Alfred Hitchcock.
