FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, May 03, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ — Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Clifford Chi-Fong Chou, PhD (see Fig. 1) with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Chou celebrates many years’ experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field.

Following a long and successful career in the automobile industry, Dr. Chou retired from the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, in 2007.

An expert in automotive safety, his tenure enabled him to climb the corporate ladder from a research engineer in 1976 to numerous high-level positions, including principal staff engineer, senior technology specialist and technology leader. Prior to working for Ford, he spent nine years as a research assistant and associate, first in the Department of Metallurgy, Mechanics, and Material Science at Michigan State University (1967-1970) and then the Biomechanics Research Center at Wayne State University (1970-1976) .

It was during this time that Dr. Chou seized upon his first opportunity to participate on a project, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation, that involved the testing and modeling safety of vehicle air bags for occupant protection under the supervision of Professor L.M. Patrick and Dr. Albert I. King.

Dr. Chou started serving as an Industrial Advisor in various Ph.D. Advisory Committees at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (March 1996-Marhy/1999) Michigan Technological University (MTU), Houghton, MI (Sept/1997 – Dec/2000), Oakland University, Auburn Hills, MI, (May/2004 – May/2007), Wayne State University, Detroit, MI (Sept2005 – Jan. 2017), and Center of Product Design and Manufacturing, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India (2013 – 2016). He was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at MTU (2003-2007). Since 2007.

Dr. Chou has been teaching Crashworthiness and Transportation Systems (2007-2016) and Vehicle Safety Engineering (2018 – ) courses as an Adjunct Professor at Wayne State University. He cherishes sharing his vast experience and technical knowledge with students, knowing that training the next generation of automotive safety engineers will ultimately save lives from road accidents.

Earning widespread recognition in the field over decades, Dr. Chou has lectured for numerous automobile industries throughout the U.S., Taiwan, and China. He created and delivered an Automotive Safety Lecture Series to Chinese automotive engineers in several OEMs and universities in Shanghai, Beijing, Tienjing and Chungchun sponsored by the United Nations for Under Development County Program in 1987.

A few years after attending Dr. Chou’s lecture series, the late Professor Shih-Lin Huang (see Fig. 2) of Tsinghau University came to the U.S.A., visiting Ford’s crash laboratory and test facilities of other companies. This inspired Prof. Huang to develop China’s first crash test facility, which successfully conducted its first crash test in 1992.

Subsequently, Dr. Chou lectured on “Safety Regulation, Test Methodologies/Facility, Restraint Systems and Injury Indices” at Tsinghua University and the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CARTAC) in 1993 and “Safety-related topics on Frontal, Side and Interior Head Impacts and Energy Absorbing Materials” at Tsinghau University and CATARC and Changchun First Auto Work in 1995, respectively. He also served on various committees for national engineering societies and, in 2001, was fortunate to work as a co-organizer for the Sixth U.S. National Conference on Computational Mechanics.

A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Chou has been elected a fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (2002) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (2005). Dr. Chou held leadership positions as a past president of the Michigan Chinese Academy Professional Association and a board member of the Ford Chinese Club. He was also a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Detroit Chinese American Association and Sigma Xi.

Renowned for his contributions, Dr. Chou was a principal researcher on vehicle safety testing and simulation methodologies and applications for occupant protections, as well as biomechanics modeling of blast traumatic brain injury for soldiers in battle fields. Some of his contributions are as follows:

• He has analytically studied the Head Injury Criterion (HIC) to establish formulae for obtaining the maximum HIC for given resultant head accelerations and/or idealized simple wave-formed pulses from tests (1974). Such formulae have been used by other researches in (1) selecting effective paddings for design of helmets for head-protection of motor-cyclists and (2) assessing head injuries of rear-seat passengers in rear impacts based on oscillograph test data.

• He also has been credited with developing a computation method for calculating viscous criterion (V*C) for assessing occupant chest injury in side impacts (1993).

• Dr. Chou has published close to 200 technical papers across various peer-reviewed journals. Two of his papers. A Review and Evaluation of Various HIC Algorithms and An Evaluation of Various Criterion Computational Algorithms (1996), and A Literature Review of Rollover Test Methodologies (2005), were referenced to facilitate SAE Standards of J1727 Injury Calculation Guidelines (1996) and J2926 Rollover Test Procedures (2011), respectively.

• He has written a chapter entitled “Fundamental Principles for Vehicle/Occupant Systems Analysis” in the book “Vehicle Crashworthiness and Occupant Protection Methods” published by American Institute of Steel and Iron in 2003. He has also contributed as a co-author on chapters entitled “A Review of Mathematical Occupant Simulation Models” published in 1993 (first Edition), and 2001 (Second Edition), and “Mathematical Models, Computer Aided Design and Occupant Safety” published in 2015 (Third Edition), in the book “Accident Injury: Biomechanics and Prevention”.

• He served in various editorial roles for such prominent publications as International Journal Vehicle Safety (Regional Editor – USA 2005 – 2019) and both SAE Journal of Transportation Safety and SAE Technical Papers (Associate Editor – 2015- present).

• He has been a lead-organizer for two sessions of the SAE Congress: The Safety Testing and Simulation Methodologies and Applications session since 1997 and the Integrated Safety Systems session since 2011.

• He notably holds more than 20 patents in his specialized field.

Dr. Chou studied at National Taiwan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and a Master of Science in engineering mechanics. He then emigrated to the United States, where he received a Doctor of Philosophy from Michigan State University.

To commemorate his career accomplishments, Dr. Chou was bestowed with a Safety Engineering Excellence Award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 1980. His team was a recipient of the International Body Engineering Conference Innovation Award (3rd place) for deployable door trim system in October 1994 and the SPC Award on Most Innovative Use of Plastics (1st place) in November, 1994.

He also received a Best Paper Award from the International Body Engineering Conference & Exhibition and Automotive & Transportation Technology Congress in 2002, two Henry Ford Technology Awards for development and implementation of deployable door trim system for improved side impact safety in 1995 and rollover occupant protection system in 2000, two Forest R. McFarland Awards in 2000 and a key contributor to the Land and Sea Group in 2007, and the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award for outstanding technical papers (i.e., Technical paper Nos. 2006-01-0721 and 2006-01-0723) in 2008 from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

Dr. Chou believes one of his greatest legacies is his family (see Fig. 3 taken on his 50th anniversary). He’s been married to his wife Chu-Hwei more than 50 years. They enjoy spending time with their son Kelvin, daughter Renee, and their respective families that brought them three grandchildren. Dr. Chou also enjoys ballroom dancing.

As a member of the Detroit Chinese Ballroom Dance Club, he and his wife won first place in the senior group (70 years old and above) in the 2008 Michigan Winter Ballroom Dance Olympics (amateurs only). Additionally, Dr. Chou and his wife are also world travelers, having visited 130 countries via land tours and cruises (see Fig. 4).
