For a month and a half, the bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will have sailing in its waters, the most relevant national fleets that will compete for the podiums of the Spanish Championship of the 29er class (June 23 to 27, 2020), the Copa de Spain of ILCA 4 (June 24 to 27) and the Spanish Snipe Championship (July 18 to 25) in the Absolute and Youth categories.
The Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, cradle of champions, has bet heavily on the return to high competition of this sport of which it is clearly a benchmark, facing the organization of three outstanding events by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation. In the next few days, the athletes who will represent practically all of the autonomous communities of our country will arrive in Gran Canaria.
«The pandemic forced the cancellation of the Spanish Snipe Championship that we had been assigned in 2020, but this year we want the return to competition to be relevant for the important national fleet that has this class in Spain,» says the RCNGC Commodore and sailor Fernando Juarez.
The coincidence of dates in the Spanish Cup of the double 29er class and the individual ILCA4, responds to the clear commitment that its current Board is carrying out for the youth light sailing classes, because according to statements by its president Maica López Galán, «They are the main driving force behind creating a powerful nautical quarry, which allows the entity to maintain the brilliant track record.»
In the next few days, the logistics of each of the territorial federations will begin to arrive on this island. We are talking about the management of 150 boats in the ILCA 4 Spanish Cup, the thirty boats that are expected for the 29er Championship and the eighty that are estimated to participate in the Snipe class.
These important national events will be preceded by the ILCA 4 Canary Islands Championship and the 29er Canary Islands Cup, delegated by the Canarian Sailing Federation to the nautical group of Gran Canaria and which will serve many local and national sailors who plan to participate, as a set-up before face these national appointments.
It should be noted that the sports results of these events will determine the teams that will represent our country in the next international competitions.
For the organization of this great sports bet, we have had the support of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria through the Insular Institute of Sports, the City Council of the capital represented in the Municipal Institute of Sports, as well as the collaboration of the Maritime Captaincy , Naviera Armas-Trasmediterránea, Boluda, the Canary Islands and Insular Sailing Federations, Vela Latina, Puerto de las Palmas and the Higher Sports Council.
