Leading the launch of the «Agreement for Tourism Training in Mexico», the Secretary of Tourism of the federal government, Miguel Torruco Marqués, assured that this will be of vital importance for the economic reactivation of the sector in the face of the severe health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Covid-19.
He emphasized that his objective is to contribute to the potential of the tourism sector by strengthening the skills of its human capital, through the use of technology and different training strategies.
He stressed that the spirit of said Agreement is focused on the free nature of the actions to be implemented and the granting of scholarships, according to the possibilities of the participating entities, with the idea of favoring the greatest number of service providers.
In turn, he invited them to join this initiative, which will contribute to the restoration of the social fabric and to have better-trained, better-paid workers who are more satisfied with the work they do.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) explained that training and professionalization is an activity designed to provide the knowledge and development of skills that are necessary in the labor field, in order to facilitate the daily task and provide a service of quality to our national and international visitors.
He affirmed that guaranteeing inclusive, equitable and quality education, and promoting learning opportunities for all, is a commitment on the agenda of the sustainable development goals.
He stressed that, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, last year the Sectur gave 30 training courses, benefiting 744 service providers.
Likewise, 75 requests were received from tourist guides for refresher courses, in accordance with current official standards, in order to endorse their credentials, resulting in the training of around four thousand.

He added that, so far in 2021, 5 quality courses in tourism service and culture have been taught, training 330 service providers.
Regarding tourist guides, 73 requests for refresher courses have been received, having trained almost 2,000 guides.
He stressed that the vast majority of these actions have been carried out virtually, in response to the conditions that the confinement itself has imposed.
Secretary Torruco Marqués explained that the problem in human resources training, according to the experience of those involved in the matter, is limited to various points, among which he highlighted the following:

Excessive supply of training courses that do not meet the needs demanded by the productive apparatus.

Little interest from employers in training operating personnel.

High staff turnover, which makes it difficult to implement training processes.

Absence of indicators to measure the impact of training and the performance of workers.
As for fast-growing destinations, problems such as:

Lack of qualified personnel to fill line positions that meet the quality standards demanded by the industry.

Necesidad de contratar mano de obra sin experiencia en la actividad turística y con bajos niveles de escolaridad.

Elevado costo de vida en los destinos turísticos, difícil de solventar con los ingresos provenientes de la actividad laboral.
Finalmente, sostuvo que México está en el camino de la recuperación de la actividad turística, donde se prevé la llegada, en 2021, de 28.4 millones de turistas internacionales; una derrama económica de 14 mil 262 millones de dólares; y una ocupación hotelera promedio anual del 45.6 por ciento.
Añadió que con base en información publicada por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (Inegi), la Sectur estima que al cierre del 2021 el Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) Turístico crezca 10.8%, respecto a 2020, y represente 7.1 por ciento del PIB nacional.
El Acuerdo por la Capacitación Turística de México fue firmado en las oficinas de Sectur por el secretario Torruco Marqués; por Luis María Arteaga de Guerrero, rectora emérita y fundadora del Centro de Estudios Superiores de San Ángel (CESSA); y por el diputado Isaías González Cuevas, secretario general de la Confederación Revolucionaria de Obreros y Campesino (CROC).
