Sectur.- The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, reported that there are currently 603 tourism projects in the country totaling 206 thousand 805 million pesos.
He specified that these data are as of May 31, 2021 and the projects are distributed in the 32 federal entities, investments that generate 137,262 new jobs, of which 39,813 are direct.
He explained that the entities with the greatest investment are Nayarit, with fifteen projects that make a total of 103 thousand 324 million pesos; followed by Campeche, with nine projects and 23 thousand 20 million pesos.
Baja California Sur, with 18 projects and 22 thousand 960 million pesos; Mexico City, with thirty projects and 15 thousand 201 million pesos; and Yucatán, with 67 projects and 11 thousand 164 million pesos, according to estimates of the federal entities regarding new and ongoing projects.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism added that foreign direct investment in tourism registered during the first quarter of this year amounted to 372.2 million dollars, which represents a growth of 174 percent compared to that captured in the same period of 2020. , equivalent to 3.1 percent of total foreign direct investment.
He explained that in 2019 foreign direct investment in tourism was 1,273 million dollars, which represented 3.7 percent of total foreign direct investment in that year; in 2020 it was 1,239.8 million dollars, meaning 4.5 percent of direct foreign investment; while as of the first quarter of 2021 there is an accumulated amount of 372.2 million dollars, which represents an increase of 174 percent over what was reported in the first quarter of 2020, when it was 135.8 million dollars.

Finally, he explained that, based on preliminary information from the Ministry of Economy, the countries that are investing the most in the Mexican tourism sector during the months of January, February and March, are the United States, with 103.1 million dollars in 2020 and 319.6 million. million dollars in 2021; Canada, with 22 million in 2020 and 15.2 million in 2021; United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, with 11.1 million dollars in 2021; Spain, with 1.3 million dollars in 2020 and 10.7 million dollars in 2021; as well as Argentina, with 1.1 million in 2020 and 1.9 million dollars during the first quarter of 2021.
